The Take
Jane Shepard, or other FemShep protagonist, provides possibly the best three game trilogy ever made, where choices have impact from one game to the next, a daunting task that most games are afraid to attempt.
Higher resolution graphics and support for Dolby Atmos make the original trilogy shine.
The only disappointment is the lack of a direct continuation of the series. Mass Effect 4 was never produced. Andromeda feels more like an offshoot rather than a numbered sequel, similar to how Gears of War Judgment is not Gears of War 4.
There is also missing Pinnacle Station DLC, the Mass Effect 3 multiplayer mode, and some censorship and cut content.
Even so, this remains the best way to experience the trilogy.
Exceptional PC modding capabilities make the computer version compelling, but Xbox Series X remains my preferred platform because of the native controller support and pick-up-and-play convenience.
A remastered compilation of the original Mass Effect trilogy and its major DLC, developed by BioWare with Abstraction Games handling the bulk of the technical remaster work — updated visuals, lighting, and effects across all three games on a single, unified engine build.

The original game: Commander Shepard and the crew of the Normandy pursue the rogue Spectre Saren across the galaxy, uncovering the first signs of the Reaper threat.

Shepard, resurrected by the pro-human group Cerberus, assembles a team of specialists for a suicide mission against the Collectors, in a game built around squad loyalty and character-driven side missions.

The trilogy's conclusion, in which Shepard rallies the galaxy's species into a unified front against the invading Reapers, with choices from the first two games shaping who's left to fight.
Shepard responds to a distress call from Terra Nova, a human colony under attack by batarian extremists who have hijacked an asteroid mining station and are steering it on a collision course with the colony's largest city.

A training-focused DLC set on Pinnacle Station, a concealed military facility built into an asteroid, where Shepard's squad runs a series of holographic VR combat trials across four modes — Survival, Time Trial, Hunt, and Capture — against simulated enemies and obstacles. Clearing every challenge and topping the leaderboards earns Shepard a private apartment on the station and a steady supply of rare, high-end gear.
An interactive motion comic recapping the story and major choices of the original Mass Effect, letting players jumping straight into Mass Effect 2 set the state of the galaxy without replaying the first game.
Adds veteran mercenary Zaeed Massani as a squadmate. His loyalty mission sends Shepard to a burning fuel refinery to help him settle a decades-old score with his former partner, Vido Santiago.
A quiet, free side mission bridging the two games — Shepard visits the wreckage of the original Normandy SR-1 on the frozen world of Alchera and pays respects at the memorial for a crew member lost in the first game's opening.
Introduces the Hammerhead, a hovering combat vehicle, along with a set of exploration missions that helped answer complaints about the ground-vehicle exploration cut from Mass Effect 2's base game.

Adds master thief Kasumi Goto as a squadmate. Her loyalty mission is a heist aboard a wealthy art collector's private yacht, stealing back a data cache while dodging security in one of the series' few non-combat-first missions.

A multi-part investigation into a Cerberus black-site facility where an AI experiment has gone catastrophically wrong, trapping a scientist's brother inside a rogue VI hybrid running loose across the station.

Reunites Shepard with Liara T'Soni to hunt down the information broker known as the Shadow Broker, culminating in a running boarding assault on the Broker's ship as it flies through a lightning storm.

A solo mission — no squadmates allowed — in which Shepard rescues a captured scientist and uncovers a Reaper plot to trigger a mass relay's destruction, forcing an impossible choice to delay the invasion.

Available at launch, adding the Prothean squadmate Javik — the last surviving member of his species, found in a stasis pod in a buried temple on Eden Prime — along with unique dialogue and Prothean lore threaded through the rest of the game.
A follow-up interactive comic recapping the major choices of Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2, giving players a way to set the state of their galaxy before starting the finale.
A free expansion of the game's ending sequences, adding cinematics and epilogue slides showing the fates of squadmates and civilizations, and clarifying the consequences of each ending without changing the underlying choices.

Shepard investigates a black-market weapons trade tied to a legendary sea monster and uncovers the Leviathans, an ancient species whose experiments to preserve organic life ultimately gave rise to the Reapers.

Sends Shepard to the lawless station of Omega to help crime lord Aria T'Loak retake her territory from a Cerberus general, teaming up with a new rival vigilante, Nyreen Kandros, along the way.

A lighter, character-focused send-off: Shepard survives an assassination attempt, confronts a vendetta from an unlikely source, and hosts a party bringing back nearly every squadmate from across the trilogy before the final battle.
